OP Juniors Graphic Henley Tank-Walmart, Basic Editions Canvas Shoes-Kmart, Aviators with heavy mirror-Rue 21, Route 66 Shorts-Kmart-worn on 06/11/10

This is just a fun summer look. The title is from a cheesy 90s song that brings a smile to my face when I hear it, Return of the Mack. You can click the Pop-Out Player button below to hear it on my summer mix (It’s the 1st song). When I saw that Walmart had brought back the OP surf label that I always thought was fun in the 90s but couldn’t afford (don’t fret, there were cute knock offs) I had to get a couple of things. This tank top is so fun, flattering and comfortable. I also picked up the yellow graphic top and my friend Jen bought me the teal colorblock dress in the 2nd polyvore below for my birthday. Check out the 2nd polyvore for my top picks from the OP at Walmart line. I bought the shorts on sale last fall or winter. Of course I had to pair the look with some new (yes, they are back) 90s style bobos. Back in the day I had bobos in a ton of colors to match a bunch of my outfits. When my sis, her bf and I went shopping last month I had to snag these men’s aviators for myself from Rue 21. They make me smile because they’re silly looking. I’ve been wearing them a lot. The lenses are very dark so that’s a plus. It seems like often sunglasses I pick up for the style don’t work at all. Please go HYPE my look if you are on LOOKBOOK.

When I was a little girl (let me enjoy this, I only get to be a little girl in flashbacks) I didn’t watch a lot of TV but I did tend to watch MTV at night. I thought it was like getting a glimpse at adults. Of course, in retrospect, it really wasn’t. It was more like a bunch of 20 somethings acting silly which can be a lot of fun. For years when I’d hear something about this show The State I remembered the title and watching sketch comedy on MTV back in the day. That’s as far as it went though. I didn’t remember the actual show at all. However it turns out I’ve been watching and enjoying the collected works of the cast (also writers) of the show for years. Recently I’ve been marathoning the show on Netflix and it’s so sarcastically hilarious. What am I getting at? This was the springboard of the fantastic Ken Marino’s career.

I first noticed Ken Marino as nice and sexy Officer Russotelli in 2000’s 101 Ways (The Things a Girl Will Do to Keep Her Volvo). I happened to be surfing movies channels years ago, came across and was absorbed by it. I recently rewatched it and still enjoyed it immensely. It’s about a young female writer trying to get by. Marino plays the only normal guy in the film so I didn’t realize he was a comedic actor.

As time went by I’d see him in small roles here and there and go “Oh, it’s that hot guy” but I didn’t know his name or follow his career. One of those times was when he played one of Phoebe’s many love interests on Charmed. Yes, I was a huge Charmed fan.

I was really happy to see him in recent years opposite his The State costar Michael Ian Black on Reaper as part of a cool gay demon couple. He also really shined in The Ten. You can watch his whole part in that film by viewing the top 2 videos.

What caused me to be so enamored with him as of late though is his kick ass performance as team leader Ron Donald on Party Down. Ron Donald is always trying to be optimistic (as with his Soup R’ Crackers goal) but things just never seem to go his way. I really dig him in this role because I have a thing for big doofy guys. I am attracted to a lot of different men but if I had a type it would be the big dumb guy.

Obviously Marino himself is very intelligent though. He’s a writer, producer and director. Most recently he directed the season 2 finale of Party Down. There’s a lot of talk about Party Down coming to an end after this season because it’s more of a labor of love than a cash cow for the cast but I’m really hoping this doesn’t happen because it’s definitely one of the funniest shows out there right now. Marino has been very vocal in his distaste of members of the cast leaving the show and his co-star Martin Starr has also expressed worry over the show’s future on twitter. I really hope a 3rd season somehow gets made.

There is no way I could go into all of his roles. Go check out his filmography and see what appeals to you.

Marino is married to Erica Oyama who appeared on another MTV show Undressed. They have one child.

“My big theory is that comedy is a lot like porno now: there’s something out there for everyone.”-Ken Marino

Say What?!?: Things You’re Never Supposed To Say

(I wrote this down a few days ago when I was upset to amuse myself. These things aren’t just random and do have a basis in reality but I’m not sure if I will be updating this post with an explanation or just let them stand for themselves.)

I liked you better before the stroke.

Hey, you’re wearing a sweater in July, are you anorexic?

I prefer Lindsay Lohan’s Edge of Seventeen cover.

It’s starting to rain, I have to go drug my dog.

I think children should be leashed in public.

To Missionaries Who Come To Your House: I’m an atheist. Please leave and never come back.

I think all drugs should be legalized.

In A Haunted House: These lights are giving me a seizure.

I really hate that I got paired with the gay guy to dissect a frog.

You soy pequito Espanol.

I can’t find these pink hot pants in my niece’s size.

I prefer government cheese to Velveeta.

Do you want something to eat? No, I plan on drinking later.

I used to write bad poetry too.

Aren’t you gonna finish that pitcher of daiquiris? It cost me $6.

Why are you hitting on me when you’re obviously gay?

You’re the guy from the bathroom.

That baby is so cute. I wish I had a baby. Me too. (in the vicinity of a friend you slept with but aren’t dating)

Lusts N Musts Summer 2010

Lusts N Musts Summer 2010Fashion Trends & Styles - Polyvore

Lusts N Musts Summer 2010 by MissEmmaMM featuring Forever21 clothing

These are the things that I am loving this summer. As you can see some of them were popular in the fashion world a year or 2 before and as mentioned in The Devil Wears Prada they are just now trickling down to us regular folks. I’m getting back into my more daring mode after feeling like I’ve been losing my spark in graphic tees and jeans.

Some of these things are 90s revivals. I was ambivalent when 80s and 90s fashion started to make a come back a year or so ago. I finally knew how adults felt when, as Junior High students, we decided to try out the 70s styles for fun. Back then most people felt that if they were around for a trend the first time then it was off limits this time. So at first I hated that everyone had on leggings and what not. Then I realized that I could rewear everything that I loved and try to get the stuff that I flunked at right this time.

Harem/Hammer/Parachute/Genie Pants

When I first heard these were making a comeback I just laughed. Then I started seeing a bunch of cool bloggers try them out and they were working. They seem to ignore the elephant in the room though. We do know these are Hammer pants, right? Yes, I did own Hammer pants in the 90s. I didn’t want them but it was like a requirement. I only wore then at home. They were rayon and had those 90s prints on them. Every time I see a pair in a thrift store I flinch and giggle. I can still do the Hammer dance. Knowing all of this I want a pair. I want a pair in black cotton. To embrace the full ridiculousness of the trend I plan on getting a pair with the front open to hint at the genie style.

Slouch Dresses
I recently bought one of these on a whim. I fell totally in love with in. I didn’t think it would work on someone who isn’t skinny but I was wrong. Both the dressy and casual styles are fantastic. If I see a cotton one that might flatter me then I may pick it up but I’m set for the dressy one.

Boho/Batik Dresses
These have been around forever. I never really dug them before. For some reason I’ve been eyeing them lately though. Unfortunately I keep seeing them for sale on Gilt.com and similar sites but the style I like is always sold out. If I can find a style that I like and find flattering I will be rocking it on the cooler days and evenings this summer.

Crop Tops
“Yeah, it’s under your tutelage she’s exploring the challenging world of bare midriffs.”-Clueless

I will not be wearing a crop top. However if you are in shape or slim and have a waist I think you should. I did wear them in that really lame ‘my crop top meets the top of my shorts way’ when I was 11. I don’t recommend this. If I were styling someone I would put them in a pair of high waisted skinny jeans or pants with just an inch or two of skin between the top of the pant and the tee.

from left: velour romper (also had it in black) with floral mood ring necklace, plaid romper, my sister in a crop top and fanny pack (oh yes)-Circa 1997

I lived in rompers when I was in junior high. I used to opt for the cotton ones with full legs because they were flattering. The rayon rompers are often unflattering because they lack structure. I recently snagged a Miley Cyrus and Max Azria romper on sale at Walmart for $6. I initially passed on even trying them on when they were close to $20. On sale though I’m willing to experiment. I haven’t found any structured rompers that work for me yet but I have no waist and smaller hips so that’s probably to be expected. This is a style you will probably want to try on in the store. FYI: Not everyone is so thrilled about this one. I mentioned this to my lil sis and she said “I stopped feeling sympathy when I heard the word romper”.

Gladiator Heels

These were pretty popular a couple of years ago. I was so not into them. Now I have my eyes on the ones that are full of studs and buckles. I’m not positive what I will be wearing these with when I pick up a pair. I just know they are necessary. I still don’t like the sandal version.

Ruched Skirts
I’ve been seeing a lot of these around lately and they really draw the eye because it’s not something you see every day.

Bodycon/Bandage Dresses
I think that these are fantastic. If I was a person with money I would opt for one from Herve Leger. I lucked out while I was shopping a sale at Rue 21 recently and found a kick ass bodycon skirt so I’m good.

Black V-Neck Dress
You probably know this as the Carrie dress but in white. I’ve tried to find one in stores but have had no luck so I guess I’ll have to pick one up online. This disappoints me because with something like this it’s about the fit.

Recipe: Mary’s Chicken Wonton Style Tacos

Posted by missemmamm on June 15, 2010

A few days ago I was thinking about the Applebee’s Chicken Wonton Tacos. I really wanted some but they treated me like shit on my birthday. I just wanted the flavor not the attitude. So I figured someone must have come up with a rip off of this recipe on the net. I found a couple of good ones without too many ingredients. I finally got to the store today to pick up what I didn’t have. BTW-I don’t cook. It’s not that I don’t think I can cook (I think if you have a recipe you can make most stuff) I just don’t like it. I think it’s boring and annoying and makes your hands smell.

My Tacos

My Tacos

Applebee's Chicken Wonton Tacos

Applebee’s Chicken Wonton Tacos

The two recipes I fused together and augmented like Frankenstein’s monster were Stacey’s Version of Applebee’s Wonton Tacos by Stacerlady and Spicy Chicken Wonton Tacos by Suburban Wife.

3 Skinless, Boneless Chicken Breasts-if you have large breasts like I did (gaffaw), you may want to use less. I had a bunch of chicken left over.
Mr. Yoshida Ginger Garlic Teriyaki Sauce

1/2 Package Cole Slaw Mix
1/4 cup diced red onion
1/4 cup Ken’s Lite Accents Asian Vinaigrette
1/2 pack (4) Ortega Whole Wheat Tortillas
Vegetable Oil
Taragon Leaves
Celery Salt
Slivered Almonds
Lemon Juice

Lemon Pepper Salt

Dipping Sauce:
Honey Mustard Dressing and Wishbone Salad Spritzers Balsamic Breeze Vinaigrette Mixed

1. Cut 4 tortillas in half and wrap them around the edge of a pot to shape them.
2. Mix 1/2 bag of cole slaw mix (don’t include the dressing if it comes with it), 1/4 cup red onion, some taragon leaves, celery salt (eyeballed), a couple of handfuls of slivered almonds and 1/4 cup Asian vinaigrette in a bowl. Refrigerate for an hour (this is how long it took me to finish the rest of it but you may have to wait if you’re faster).
3. Boil chicken breasts. Season with lemon juice and lemon pepper salt.
4. Cut up chicken breasts into little pieces.
5. Fry chicken breasts in teriyaki sauce.

6. Fry tortillas.
7. Put cole slaw mixture and chicken in tacos.
8. Mix the honey mustard dressing and balsamic vinaigrette to make a dipping sauce (1/2 and 1/2). Eyeball how much you need for however many you’re serving.

Cooking Time: 30 minutes for people who cook. 1 hour for people like me who never cook and it takes them extra time to cut stuff up.

Number of Tacos: 8-(2-4 servings). I like to eat 3 at a time.

Notes: I omitted stuff from the other recipes that I don’t like-diced jalapenos and lime. (Yes, the Hispanic community used to love when I did shots of tequila w/o lime. They thought I was being a badass. I just don’t like it.)

I also didn’t have any red pepper flakes or cilantro so I substituted.
The other recipes didn’t mention a dipping sauce but the Applebee’s where I live always serve them with one. It has a honey mustard tang so I threw something together.
Plus I went to 3 different stores and no one around here sells wonton wrappers (what you’re supposed to use as the taco shells) so I just got the whole wheat tortillas. You can probably get that specialty shit in NYC or something but not here. You could use whatever type of tortillas you want or have.
I did burn the tacos but I turned them inside out and I don’t care. They still tasted good.
I always like how people in movies drink wine while they cook but I don’t really drink wine so I had a beer.

The Sexy Bradley Cooper

Posted by missemmamm on June 11, 2010

Guy on Guy Action in Wet Hot American Summer

Ripping off his clothes “to save a life” on Nip/Tuck

Bradley Cooper first came to my attention in 2005. I had never watched the show Alias because I thought it looked boring. Prior to the 4th season premiere though they were heavily advertising it. I didn’t have anything else to watch so I caught the season premiere. Of course I was hooked. I, as usual, was broke and had to get the DVDs used cheaply on eBay. Back then the sets retailed for over $40. I actually bought season 3 before 1 and 2 because it was the only one I could get really cheap at the time. Confusing but I still got into it. A month or so later I picked up the other 2. Going through the series I thought this Will guy was so cute.

In 2005 I caught Bradley Cooper’s appearances in Wedding Crashers and was all upset like “How could they make him a jerk?”. Later when I became a guide the only questions I ever had about him were “Who’s the asshole in Wedding Crashers?” and I’d sigh.

Then he got the lead in the Fox series Kitchen Confidential. I thought, awesome, he’s gonna be a star. No, the show was canceled hella quick. In the series he was playing a fictionalized version of celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain.

In 2007 he had a memorable role as actor Aiden Stone in Season 5 on one of my favorite shows, Nip/Tuck. Of course, he killed it.

In 2008 he was the lead in the awesome horror flick Midnight Meat Train but it was rushed in and out of theaters. You should definitely check it out though.

Then last year I was visiting family in Maryland and we went to see Fast & Furious. In front of it they had the trailer for The Hangover. I thought this was really cool because I had my first trip to Vegas planned for the next month. The movie looked hilarious. It turns out that what it took for him to become a star was a big budget comedy. Ever since then I now get “Who’s the sexy guy from The Hangover?” when working. I much prefer that description. Later that year he co-starred with Sandra Bullock in the awful looking romantic comedy All About Steve.

Most of his other roles were minor or I’ve tried to scrub the movie from my brain. (Case in point: He’s Just Not That Into You, ack!).

Later I realized that he was one of the guys making out (yum) in the hilarious Wet Hot American Summer. He also played a hot jerk on an episode of Sex and the City.

Today his big budget action film The A-Team opens. Frankly I know nothing about the show except from stuff they’ve shown on Family Guy. He looks down right sexy in it though and I like those types of movies so I’ll be seeing it soon.

They are also in pre-production on The Hangover 2. I hope it’s as funny as the 1st. In 2011 he will also appear in a thriller called The Dark Fields which sounds pretty neat.

He’s 6′1 but wanted to be taller.

“I had size 12 feet when I was 10, so I thought I was going to be 6′ 8″. My goal was to be able to dunk a basket. I wound up being 6′ 1″ with size 14 feet. I got the raw end of the deal.”-Bradley Cooper (from IMDB.com)

He’s currently dating Renee Zellweger. I think they make a cute couple.

Style File: Rockin Hyde

Posted by missemmamm on June 9, 2010

Mr. Hyde’s Nasty Fall Tank-Geagua Lake, Mossimo Print Tank-Target, American Apparel Slit Leggings-Gilt, Fashion Bug Metal Accent Wedges-thrifted, Joe Boxer Balconette Bra-Kmart

This is what I wore on Memorial Day. My sis, her boyfriend and I went shopping, then had a cookout with my folks, then watched Party Down that night.

I really wanted to wear these new leggings from American Apparel. They are so kick ass. Just like the dress I wore on my Bday I bought these from Gilt.com I had seen American Apparel stuff for years and there were things I wanted but I’m cheap so I never could bring myself to buy any of it. These were half of the original AA price. I had seen similar leggings on Forever21.com when writing this article last fall but I’ve never ordered from there and was worried about fit. I love these. eBay’s Fashion Vault also had them on sale for the same price last week in 2 other colors. I waited a day because I wasn’t sure if I wanted one or both and when I checked the next day they were sold out in my size. I should have known “Always jump on a sale”.

Recently I was visiting my mom’s and found this tank top I bought when I was like 12 (we’re pack rats). My parents used to take us to tons of amusement parks when we were kids, which was awesome. We got to visit Geauga Lake for 2 or 3 summers before they changed over to a Six Flags. It was still fun as Six Flags but not as fun. Now it’s just a water park.

My sister and I had to ride this crazy ride, Mr. Hyde’s Nasty Fall. We had to wait around because they were servicing it. It turns out that it broke down all of the time. We sure were risk takers. It’s not listed in that history but a few years ago my sister and I visited the Maryland Six Flags and rode it there. So I guess it was passed around a bit. That time they hadn’t cleaned it and had a major BO smell, ugh. It was was too big and a men’s tank but I thought the graphic was cool and it was about $6 so I bought it. Then I never wore it until now.

The bra I’m wearing underneath is Joe Boxer from Kmart. I wore it in my Springy Photo Set. I highly recommend these bras. They are so flattering and comfy. I converted my sister to them when she visited.

P.S. I used to wear these shoes clubbing in Bmore and they are transvestite club kid approved.

If you are on LookBook please go hype this outfit.

June Movie Bugs

Posted by missemmamm on June 4, 2010

This is the Forgetting Sarah Marshall spin off. Russell Brand reprises his role as rocker Aldous Snow while Jonah Hill plays a completely new character. Snow has went back to his old ways and Hill has to go retrieve him. I’ve thought Hill was funny since his appearance as the guy buying platforms in 40 Year Old Virgin. All of the clips and trailers for this crack me up even the 3rd or 4th time. I’ll be checking this out this weekend.

Splice stars Sarah Polly and Adrian Brody. This looks like a pretty cool scifi flick. It looks a bit like a darker Species except instead of raising an alien it’s a new type of human. Reviews have been good.

This is a live action movie based on the comic strip. The strip is sometimes funny. I love that they had Owen Wilson voice Marmaduke. The always awesome Judy Greer costars. Plus there are a ton of other actors supplying voices. I’ll be renting this one. You can check out the trailer here.

I love Colin Farrell but the trailers I’ve seen for this were hella boring. Plot (from IMDB.com): “The story of an Irish fisherman who discovers a woman in his fishing net who he believes to be a mermaid.” Stephen Rea costars.

Finding Bliss-06/04 (Limited)

YouTube Preview Image
I hadn’t heard about this until I started putting this post together. Leelee Sobieski stars as a wannabe filmmaker in this comedy. She inadvertently gets involved in a porn and decides to shoot her own movie at night. Jamie Kennedy, Denise Richards and Kristen Johnston costar. This looks like it has the potential to be pretty funny.

The Killers-06/04
This is the new action romantic comedy starring Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl. Before I wasn’t sure but after seeing the nonstop TVs ads I’ve decided this will suck. You can view the trailer here.

The A-Team-06/11
This is the big screen remake of the TV series of the same name. I’m not gonna lie, I’m all over this movie because Bradley Cooper looks hot in it. It looks like it could be a fun flick. Liam Neeson, Jessica Biel and Patrick Wilson costar.

The Karate Kid-06/11
I have no interest in any of the Karate Kid movies. Just restating my opinion that Will Smith will use this movie to boost his son, Jaden Smith (the lead), to stardom. Obviously Smith knows what he’s doing when it comes to making careers.

Toy Story 3
Plot (from IMDB.com): “Woody (Hanks), Buzz (Allen), and the rest of their toy-box friends are dumped in a day-care center after their owner, Andy, departs for college.” I think this one looks like it could be pretty good if you’re a fan of the Toy Story movies (I was). As usual, Tom Hanks and Tim Allen star.

Jonah Hex-06/18
This adaptation of a comic books stars Josh Brolin as the disfigured bounty hunter. John Malkovich costars. This adventure film looks like a good time. I’m a fan of Brolin but I get the feeling that he was picked because even though he’s been acting for 25 years many people on the street wouldn’t recognize him. That has to be awkward. Even if this looked bad I’d be jazzed about it, just look at Megan Fox in it. Go here to see the trailer. You can download the poster and wallpapers at the official site. Set photos are from megansafox.com. I highly recommend this site as an up to date resource for Megan Fox photos.

Cyrus-06/18 (Limited)
This is a dark comedy that stars John C. Reilly and Marisa Tomei as a new couple. Jonah Hill plays Tomei’s needy son. Go watch the trailer here.

Grown Ups-06/25
If I had only seen the cast and not any trailers for this I’d probably think it was gonna be amazing. It’s a comedy about old friends who reunite starring a ton of SNL actors: David Spade, Adam Sandler, Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, Maya Rudolph, Colin Quinn, Tim Meadows and Norm MacDonald. The results don’t look that hot though. On Spade’s twitter it sounded like they had a ball filming it but that shouldn’t be your only reason for making a movie, right? I’ll probably check it out while it’s in theaters just because I love Spade.

Knight and Day
Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz star in this action film about a woman getting pulled into an adventure with a spy. No you aren’t seeing double, there are big similarities between this and the previously mentioned The Killers movie. Peter Sarsgaard (who I love!) costars. This looks like it could have been fun years ago, like before we knew Cruise was insane.

Style File: SATC 2 on My Bday

I wore this outfit when Donna and I went to see Sex and the City 2 on my birthday, last Sunday (May 30th). The dress is by Isabel Lu. I bought it from Gilt.com. Gilt is a members only invitation site that sells designer clothes at awesome prices. This dress was about 70% off of the regular price. You can sign up here. My sister is wearing my Sex and the City shirt that I bought in 2008 when the first film was released. It was from Sarah Jessica Parker’s now defunct Bitten line. It was sold at Steve & Barry’s. I remember when I saw the line’s debut on Oprah. The problem was the clothes weren’t that interesting. I guess I was hoping for Carrie style but that’s actually Patricia Field’s style not SJP’s. I thought the movie was really fun. Go here to hype my look if you are on LookBook.
