Sidney Poitier as a Charismatic Leader

Posted by missemmamm on January 7, 2022

Sidney Poitier in In the Heat of the Night

by Mary Miracle, BA in Sociology

Sadly, actor Sidney Poitier passed away yesterday at 94 years of age. In memory of him, I am publishing an academic essay I wrote for a sociology class in October 2019 that discusses him. I have edited the tenses to reflect his passing.

Compare and Contrast – Two Leaders in Diplomacy

This essay compares Shirley Temple Black and Sidney Poitier as charismatic leaders in diplomacy. I will showcase this using the characteristics of Idealized Influence, Inspirational Motivation, Intellectual Stimulation, and Individualized Consideration. These two public figures are most alike in terms of Idealized Influence and Inspirational Motivation. Conversely, they differ in terms of Intellectual Stimulation and Individualized Consideration.

Shirley Temple Black was a successful child actress, and later a diplomat. She was the United States ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia and Chief of Protocol of the United States. Sidney Poitier is a successful actor and director. He also served as the non-resident Bahamian ambassador to Japan from 1997-2007 and the ambassador from the Bahamas to UNESCO from 2002 to 2007.

Shirley Temple Black

Shirley Temple Black used Idealized Influence quite well as a positive role model. She had been seen as a role model since she was a famous actress during her childhood. Her persona was considered extremely positive in Ghana. From what I’ve read, this was unusual. The public adored her. She was often photographed in their newspaper when she visited. However, she was shrewd when working as the face of a movement. She once had to tell a coworker not to interrupt her when he was trying to “amplify what she was saying” during interviews. She told him to never do so again and that “there was only one star on the stage” during her interviews.

Sidney Poitier was also adept at Idealized Influence. He came off as humble in interviews. However, he constructed a heroic, intelligent, noble, sensitive brand as an actor. He created an idealized perfect man for others to aspire to. This is even more commendable, as this was on the cusp of the Civil Rights movement. He is considered the first black leading man in Hollywood. That’s a lot to carry, but he did so with grace.

Sidney Poitier in Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner

Shirley Temple Black did well with Inspirational Motivation. She was seen as hugely inspiring to her followers. It was said that she cultivated contacts well and that her calls were always taken. People couldn’t seem to turn her down. She was seen as inspirational by many world leaders. Then-President Bill Clinton pronounced that “She has to be the only person who both saved the entire movie studio from failure and also contributed to the fall of communism. From her childhood to the present day, Shirley has always been an ambassador for what’s best in America”.

Sidney Poitier is also a master of Inspirational Motivation. Then-President Barack Obama once stated, “It has been said that Sidney Poitier does not make movies. He makes milestones — milestones of artistic excellence. Milestones of American progress.” In 1963, Poitier inspired many when he became the first African-American to win the Academy Award for best actor. In an interview with Poitier, Oprah once said “In my spirit I knew that because you had won the Oscar, I too could do something special—and I didn’t even know what it was. I thought, If he can be that, I wonder what I can be.” Poitier has stated that he knew about his influence as “so much was riding on me as one of the first blacks out there”.

Sidney Poitier with Barack Obama

When it comes to Intellectual Stimulation, Shirley Temple Black challenged her followers to think outside of the box. She encouraged those who protested. She was always making use of her charisma. She used a protest in Czechoslovakia to get to know the movers and shakers of that area.

Sidney Poitier used Intellectual Stimulation in an entirely different way. He challenged whites to see African Americans as equals within the context of his films. At the same time, he was true to his upbringing. Poitier did not harbor any internalized racism. He’s said, “I had in mind what was expected of me—not just what other blacks expected but what my mother and father expected. And what I expected of myself”. However, he did realize the breadth of racism once he was exposed to it. He’s stated, “You’re gonna have to be twice as good as the white folks in order to get half as much”. Some saw his craft as almost boring. This came up in a well known article that referred to his acting style as “an antiseptic, one-dimensional hero”. His characters struck some as too admirable, and therefore not human enough. Some called him an “Uncle Tom”. At that same time, Poitier was an active participant in the Civil Rights Movement. He even stood alongside protestors for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s 1963 March on Washington. Sidney Poitier’s career started by breaking race barriers in film, but he has acknowledged that “I am not all about race…I’ve had to find balance”.

Shirley Temple Black in The Little Princess

When it comes to Individualized Consideration, Shirley Temple Black was a master. When visiting foreign countries as a U.S. ambassador, she showed respect for the locals’ feelings by speaking their language. It has been reported that she always “made a point of saying welcome and thank you in local languages”. No matter the person’s social standing, she did not turn down photos when asked. She always seemed delighted to take photos with people anywhere, including the airport. Shirley Temple Black was not just the face of what she believed in. She also put in the work. It was not unusual for her to work 10 hour days and take the time to personally talk to people in the streets when campaigning for change.

Sidney Poitier used Individualized Consideration differently. He has made a point to always sign autographs when asked as he does not want fans to experience the rejection that he once felt in their place. However, most of his followers’ needs have been addressed on a larger scale. In his roles, he exuded black pride. He turned down roles that contrasted with his values even when he needed the money.  He also believed that “we are a part of a single human family — regardless of race, religion or social status”. He has espoused the following, “While you are here, try to do the best you can with your life and be faithful to your values and principles. Be kind and respectful of others”.

Sidney Poitier in To Sir With Love

In conclusion, I found that Shirley Temple Black and Sidney Poitier, as charismatic leaders in diplomacy, are most similar with regard to Idealized Influence and Inspirational Motivation. They differ greatly in terms of Intellectual Stimulation and Individualized Consideration. I believe that their differences can be attributed to their upbringing. Shirley Temple was born into a middle-class family in Santa Monica, California. Her mother promptly paid for her to attend a dance school. Though she was always a hard worker, she did not struggle for success.

Conversely Sidney Poitier struggled for the first chunk of his life. He was born a preemie that his father assumed would die. He was born into extreme poverty on Cat Island in the Bahamas. His father was a dirt farmer. He did not receive much education or social interaction. At age 15, he left to find a better life. Finding segregation in Florida, he then moved to New York. He worked as a janitor in exchange for acting lessons. Their similarities may stem from them both being actors who are adept at public speaking.

Overall, I believe that Shirley Temple Black best highlights the model I chose for the characteristics of a charismatic leader.  I believe that Poitier has made more of an impact in the United States. He made huge strides for the Civil Rights Movement. However, primarily in terms of a diplomatic charismatic leader, Shirley Temple Black had more opportunities to exercise these characteristics. Poitier’s work in diplomacy was brief and yielded very little during my research.

Notes:

This piece was written over two years before Poitier’s passing. It was not written precisely to celebrate him, but rather to fit into an assignment for my university. We were given free rein on each piece to choose our leaders. I did choose and keep Poitier despite not being able to find as much on him politically as the other actor because I think he is very important overall in terms of change and rights in our country. I chose to neither use in-text citations or hyperlinks for my references as it flows better this way, but they are below. Due to generational poverty, I do not currently have access to my .com website, but this post will be ported over when I do.

Hit Me With Your Best Shot: Showgirls

Posted by missemmamm on August 5, 2010

Well you may have noticed a lack of posts lately due to my blog being taken off line in the Great Blogetery Fiasco of 2010. Supposedly they will be back online on the 8th. I would wait to post again until then but I had to participate in Film Experience’s Hit Me With Your Best Shot Showgirls post. It appears I’m late but oh well. As you know if you read my blog, Showgirls is my favorite movie. I even bought a role in Rena Riffel’s sequel Showgirl. FYI: She has begun filming and has some behind the scenes shots up on Facebook.

“She’s no butterfly. Tony, she’s all pelvic thrust.”

Photobucket

Photobucket

I considered this thrust photo from the rehearsals as my favorite because it shows how hard she is working but I had to go with an ending shot because even after all she goes through she has stars in her eyes. She’s accomplished her showgirl dream and now she’s gonna be a Hollywood star.

BTW-You should definitely read Film Experience regularly. I just discovered it a couple of weeks ago but it’s quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

Get The Hottest Swimsuit (as seen on Jennifer Love Hewitt & Anna Paquin)

Posted by missemmamm on July 24, 2010

Recently both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Anna Paquin appeared on the covers of People and Self in the cutest swimsuit. I had to know who made it. They are wearing pieces from Betsey Johnson’s Petal Pusher collection. I was delighted to find out about Betsey’s swim line. I was only familiar with her dresses prior to this. The collection comes in 2 colors and many different styles including Demi Bra Top, Banded and Sliding Halter Top, Tie Side Hipster Bottom, Skirted Hipster Bottom, Cheeky Peeky Bottom and a Short and Strapless Dress. I am so in love with this sweet and sexy look. The reason there are multiple sources for most styles is that not every store has every size in and you may prefer one shopping site over another. Just click on the polyvore to go find out where to buy these pieces.

July Movie Lilies

Posted by missemmamm on July 9, 2010

Yes, I’m a week late on this but it turns out that the only things that came out last week were vampire trash and M. Night Shyamalan’s wet dream so it’s nothing I would have highlighted anyway.

Grease-7/08 (Limited)

Photobucket
You know Grease. As a child it’s that really awesome movie with the fun singing and a hot, young John Travolta. As an adult it’s not quite the same. This is a re-release sing along. Apparently they think it will go over with today’s teens because of their love of High School Musical and Glee (yuck! on both counts). I saw Grease on the big screen during the 1998 re-release. Oh, who am I kidding? If we were actually getting it here I’d go see it again. Side Note: Musical teachers love to have kids perform songs from this but change the words because they are “offensive” (okay, pussy wagon is a bit offensive for 11 year olds but changing art is fucked up). My sister encountered this as a pre-teen in show choir. It was also spoofed on an episode of SNL hosted by Christopher Walken.

Predators-7/09
Photobucket
Predators is another one of these movies that is a sequel/remake/reimagining thing. I’m sure you know by now that Predators are some freaky ass aliens. I’ve seen some of the Predator movies and I’m not a big fan. They’re okay but I’m not going out of my way to see them. I really don’t get the commercials/trailers for this that try to avoid showing the Predator. It’s not like a whole new character we’ve never seen. C’mon on. The film stars Adrien Brody (yum), Laurence Fishburne, Danny Trejo and Topher Grace (who I haven’t seen in any ads?). It was directed by Nimrod Antal who also did Armored and Vacancy (ugh).

The Kids Are All Right-7/09

YouTube Preview Image
The plot is that the daughter of a lesbian couple wants to find her dad (I mean sperm donor). This looks like the type needlessly dramatic movie I usually avoid except Annette Bening is playing one of the moms. I just think she is a fantastic actress. So I will eventually rent it. Julianne Moore is the other mom. Of course she’s a good actress but I feel like so many of her flicks are hit or miss. Mark Ruffalo is the sperm donor. I used to ogle him but this is not an oglable (invented word) role. The daughter is Mia Wasikowska who recently played Alice in Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland.

The Sorcerer’s Apprentice-7/16
Photobucket
This is a Disney flick that should appeal to the 13 year old boys out there. Nic Cage plays a sorcerer who takes Jay Baruchel under his wing as his apprentice and they fight a bunch of CGI generated dangers. This is obviously a part of some contract Cage has with Disney that probably includes The National Treasure movies. You know, he needs the money. It looks okay but major things about this movie bother me. In any other movie like this the main “boy” would be in his teens. Baruchel is 28. If I were casting it I would have picked someone who was 16 or 17. Then you have Alfred Molina playing a villain. Molina doesn’t scare me at all. I didn’t understand when they put him in Spider-Man 2 and I don’t get it here either. When he comes out in his elaborate costumes trying to strike fear into one’s heart I feel like he should be stepping onto a stage to lip synch a song. Yes, he looks like a big drag queen. I like drag queens but they don’t scare me. As usual, Nic Cage is somehow hot despite his strange hair.

Inception-7/16
Photobucket
This is the 2nd really cool looking mind bending flick from Leonardo DiCaprio this year. The film is about people who go into your dreams and steal your secrets. It looks deliciously trippy. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen Page, Kem Watanbe, Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine and Lukas Hass are also in the cast. Even the promo they are doing for the flick is killer. Go here to watch the trailer.

Salt-7/23
Photobucket
Salt is about a CIA officer (Angelina Jolie) who may or may not be a Russian spy. Do we even care anymore? I would have been all over something like this in 2000 but can you really even look at Jolie anymore without thinking about her crazy approach to mothering? I prefer the sexual cutter.

Life During Wartime-7/23
YouTube Preview Image
YouTube Preview Image
Plot from IMDB: “Friends, family, and lovers struggle to find love, forgiveness, and meaning in a war-torn world riddled with comedy and pathos.” I am a fan of Todd Solondz’s films. I’m not really sure what this movie is about but I’m sure I will rent it and figure that out in the future. The cast includes Allison Janney, Paul Reubens, Ally Sheedy, Gaby Hoffman and Chris Marquette.

Dinner for Schmucks
-7/30
Photobucket
This is the July released that I am super-psyched about. It’s a comedy about a succesful group who meet to have dinner parties and see who can invite the biggest idiot like the non-sexual version of a dogfight. The cast includes Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, Zach Galifianakis, Ron Livingston and Bruce Greenwood. This is a remake of the 1998 French film The Dinner Game which I have seen a few times since my sister owns it. The Dinner Game was very funny and starred Thierry Lhermitte, whose name I wouldn’t recognize but whose face I always do. Dinner for Schmucks looks fantastic. They’ve been playing the trailer here for months but I still laugh everytime. I was a little worried that they put everything good in the trailer but I saw a commercial earlier with some other funny bits so I’m hoping it’s gonna be as awesome as I expect. It was directed by Jay Roach who did the Meet The Parents movies (ew) and The Austin Powers movies (cool). Go here to watch the trailer.

The Extra Man-7/30 (Limited)
YouTube Preview Image
Kevin Kline is an old, misogynistic, gigolo who speaks like an Oscar Wilde character. Paul Dano (The Girl Next Door) is the young guy who is finding himself and is fascinated with Kline. John C. Reilly and Katie Holmes co-star. I’ll be renting this when it trickles down to Blu-Ray since it’s only opening in NY & LA.

Get Low-7/30 (Limited)
YouTube Preview Image
Robert Duvall is a hermit who wants to throw a funeral party. It’s a funeral that you have while you are alive. It looks pretty interesting. The cast includes Billy Murray, Sissy Spacek, Gerald McRaney and Lucas Black.

Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore-7/30

Photobucket
I would normally ignore this lame children’s sequel but I must mention how strange it is. First of all the title is an homage to the often parodied James Bond character Pussy Galore which would be weird enough. I’ve been seeing parts of the commercial though and it’s got some strange ass shit in it like a cat unzipping itself from a dog suit. Just look at the posters. I’m pretty sure if I was a little kid I would get “3D” nightmares from this. As if I wasn’t already afraid of the future from listening to the woes of the youth of America every night. If this is what little tiny kids want to watch I’m pretty sure we’re all fucked.

OP Juniors Graphic Henley Tank-Walmart, Basic Editions Canvas Shoes-Kmart, Aviators with heavy mirror-Rue 21, Route 66 Shorts-Kmart-worn on 06/11/10

This is just a fun summer look. The title is from a cheesy 90s song that brings a smile to my face when I hear it, Return of the Mack. You can click the Pop-Out Player button below to hear it on my summer mix (It’s the 1st song). When I saw that Walmart had brought back the OP surf label that I always thought was fun in the 90s but couldn’t afford (don’t fret, there were cute knock offs) I had to get a couple of things. This tank top is so fun, flattering and comfortable. I also picked up the yellow graphic top and my friend Jen bought me the teal colorblock dress in the 2nd polyvore below for my birthday. Check out the 2nd polyvore for my top picks from the OP at Walmart line. I bought the shorts on sale last fall or winter. Of course I had to pair the look with some new (yes, they are back) 90s style bobos. Back in the day I had bobos in a ton of colors to match a bunch of my outfits. When my sis, her bf and I went shopping last month I had to snag these men’s aviators for myself from Rue 21. They make me smile because they’re silly looking. I’ve been wearing them a lot. The lenses are very dark so that’s a plus. It seems like often sunglasses I pick up for the style don’t work at all. Please go HYPE my look if you are on LOOKBOOK.

When I was a little girl (let me enjoy this, I only get to be a little girl in flashbacks) I didn’t watch a lot of TV but I did tend to watch MTV at night. I thought it was like getting a glimpse at adults. Of course, in retrospect, it really wasn’t. It was more like a bunch of 20 somethings acting silly which can be a lot of fun. For years when I’d hear something about this show The State I remembered the title and watching sketch comedy on MTV back in the day. That’s as far as it went though. I didn’t remember the actual show at all. However it turns out I’ve been watching and enjoying the collected works of the cast (also writers) of the show for years. Recently I’ve been marathoning the show on Netflix and it’s so sarcastically hilarious. What am I getting at? This was the springboard of the fantastic Ken Marino’s career.

I first noticed Ken Marino as nice and sexy Officer Russotelli in 2000’s 101 Ways (The Things a Girl Will Do to Keep Her Volvo). I happened to be surfing movies channels years ago, came across and was absorbed by it. I recently rewatched it and still enjoyed it immensely. It’s about a young female writer trying to get by. Marino plays the only normal guy in the film so I didn’t realize he was a comedic actor.

As time went by I’d see him in small roles here and there and go “Oh, it’s that hot guy” but I didn’t know his name or follow his career. One of those times was when he played one of Phoebe’s many love interests on Charmed. Yes, I was a huge Charmed fan.

I was really happy to see him in recent years opposite his The State costar Michael Ian Black on Reaper as part of a cool gay demon couple. He also really shined in The Ten. You can watch his whole part in that film by viewing the top 2 videos.

What caused me to be so enamored with him as of late though is his kick ass performance as team leader Ron Donald on Party Down. Ron Donald is always trying to be optimistic (as with his Soup R’ Crackers goal) but things just never seem to go his way. I really dig him in this role because I have a thing for big doofy guys. I am attracted to a lot of different men but if I had a type it would be the big dumb guy.

Obviously Marino himself is very intelligent though. He’s a writer, producer and director. Most recently he directed the season 2 finale of Party Down. There’s a lot of talk about Party Down coming to an end after this season because it’s more of a labor of love than a cash cow for the cast but I’m really hoping this doesn’t happen because it’s definitely one of the funniest shows out there right now. Marino has been very vocal in his distaste of members of the cast leaving the show and his co-star Martin Starr has also expressed worry over the show’s future on twitter. I really hope a 3rd season somehow gets made.

There is no way I could go into all of his roles. Go check out his filmography and see what appeals to you.

FUN FACTS:
Marino is married to Erica Oyama who appeared on another MTV show Undressed. They have one child.

“My big theory is that comedy is a lot like porno now: there’s something out there for everyone.”-Ken Marino

I think we should write Ken Marino and tell him how amazing he is. He is so underrated that while putting this together I couldn’t find any fansites for him and had to get some of the pics from his own, abandoned Myspace page.

Say What?!?: Things You’re Never Supposed To Say

(I wrote this down a few days ago when I was upset to amuse myself. These things aren’t just random and do have a basis in reality but I’m not sure if I will be updating this post with an explanation or just let them stand for themselves.)

I liked you better before the stroke.

Hey, you’re wearing a sweater in July, are you anorexic?

I prefer Lindsay Lohan’s Edge of Seventeen cover.

It’s starting to rain, I have to go drug my dog.

I think children should be leashed in public.

To Missionaries Who Come To Your House: I’m an atheist. Please leave and never come back.

I think all drugs should be legalized.

In A Haunted House: These lights are giving me a seizure.

I really hate that I got paired with the gay guy to dissect a frog.

You soy pequito Espanol.

I can’t find these pink hot pants in my niece’s size.

I prefer government cheese to Velveeta.

Do you want something to eat? No, I plan on drinking later.

I used to write bad poetry too.

Aren’t you gonna finish that pitcher of daiquiris? It cost me $6.

Why are you hitting on me when you’re obviously gay?

You’re the guy from the bathroom.

That baby is so cute. I wish I had a baby. Me too. (in the vicinity of a friend you slept with but aren’t dating)

To A Doctor:

I demand to be fully sedated for this operation.

Fuck You.

You don’t know what you’re talking about. You can’t speak English and you just added 2+5 and held up 8 fingers.

Lusts N Musts Summer 2010

Lusts N Musts Summer 2010 by MissEmmaMM featuring Forever21 clothing

These are the things that I am loving this summer. As you can see some of them were popular in the fashion world a year or 2 before and as mentioned in The Devil Wears Prada they are just now trickling down to us regular folks. I’m getting back into my more daring mode after feeling like I’ve been losing my spark in graphic tees and jeans.

Some of these things are 90s revivals. I was ambivalent when 80s and 90s fashion started to make a come back a year or so ago. I finally knew how adults felt when, as Junior High students, we decided to try out the 70s styles for fun. Back then most people felt that if they were around for a trend the first time then it was off limits this time. So at first I hated that everyone had on leggings and what not. Then I realized that I could rewear everything that I loved and try to get the stuff that I flunked at right this time.

Harem/Hammer/Parachute/Genie Pants

When I first heard these were making a comeback I just laughed. Then I started seeing a bunch of cool bloggers try them out and they were working. They seem to ignore the elephant in the room though. We do know these are Hammer pants, right? Yes, I did own Hammer pants in the 90s. I didn’t want them but it was like a requirement. I only wore then at home. They were rayon and had those 90s prints on them. Every time I see a pair in a thrift store I flinch and giggle. I can still do the Hammer dance. Knowing all of this I want a pair. I want a pair in black cotton. To embrace the full ridiculousness of the trend I plan on getting a pair with the front open to hint at the genie style.

Slouch Dresses
I recently bought one of these on a whim. I fell totally in love with in. I didn’t think it would work on someone who isn’t skinny but I was wrong. Both the dressy and casual styles are fantastic. If I see a cotton one that might flatter me then I may pick it up but I’m set for the dressy one.

Boho/Batik Dresses
These have been around forever. I never really dug them before. For some reason I’ve been eyeing them lately though. Unfortunately I keep seeing them for sale on Gilt.com and similar sites but the style I like is always sold out. If I can find a style that I like and find flattering I will be rocking it on the cooler days and evenings this summer.

Crop Tops

“Yeah, it’s under your tutelage she’s exploring the challenging world of bare midriffs.”-Clueless

I will not be wearing a crop top. However if you are in shape or slim and have a waist I think you should. I did wear them in that really lame ‘my crop top meets the top of my shorts way’ when I was 11. I don’t recommend this. If I were styling someone I would put them in a pair of high waisted skinny jeans or pants with just an inch or two of skin between the top of the pant and the tee.

Rompers

from left: velour romper (also had it in black) with floral mood ring necklace, plaid romper, my sister in a crop top and fanny pack (oh yes)-Circa 1997

I lived in rompers when I was in junior high. I used to opt for the cotton ones with full legs because they were flattering. The rayon rompers are often unflattering because they lack structure. I recently snagged a Miley Cyrus and Max Azria romper on sale at Walmart for $6. I initially passed on even trying them on when they were close to $20. On sale though I’m willing to experiment. I haven’t found any structured rompers that work for me yet but I have no waist and smaller hips so that’s probably to be expected. This is a style you will probably want to try on in the store. FYI: Not everyone is so thrilled about this one. I mentioned this to my lil sis and she said “I stopped feeling sympathy when I heard the word romper”.

Gladiator Heels

These were pretty popular a couple of years ago. I was so not into them. Now I have my eyes on the ones that are full of studs and buckles. I’m not positive what I will be wearing these with when I pick up a pair. I just know they are necessary. I still don’t like the sandal version.

Ruched Skirts
I’ve been seeing a lot of these around lately and they really draw the eye because it’s not something you see every day.

Bodycon/Bandage Dresses
I think that these are fantastic. If I was a person with money I would opt for one from Herve Leger. I lucked out while I was shopping a sale at Rue 21 recently and found a kick ass bodycon skirt so I’m good.

Black V-Neck Dress
You probably know this as the Carrie dress but in white. I’ve tried to find one in stores but have had no luck so I guess I’ll have to pick one up online. This disappoints me because with something like this it’s about the fit.

Recipe: Mary’s Chicken Wonton Style Tacos

Posted by missemmamm on June 15, 2010

A few days ago I was thinking about the Applebee’s Chicken Wonton Tacos. I really wanted some but they treated me like shit on my birthday. I just wanted the flavor not the attitude. So I figured someone must have come up with a rip off of this recipe on the net. I found a couple of good ones without too many ingredients. I finally got to the store today to pick up what I didn’t have. BTW-I don’t cook. It’s not that I don’t think I can cook (I think if you have a recipe you can make most stuff) I just don’t like it. I think it’s boring and annoying and makes your hands smell.

Applebee’s Chicken Wonton Tacos

The two recipes I fused together and augmented like Frankenstein’s monster were Stacey’s Version of Applebee’s Wonton Tacos by Stacerlady and Spicy Chicken Wonton Tacos by Suburban Wife.

Ingredients:
Tacos

3 Skinless, Boneless Chicken Breasts-if you have large breasts like I did (gaffaw), you may want to use less. I had a bunch of chicken left over.
Mr. Yoshida Ginger Garlic Teriyaki Sauce

1/2 Package Cole Slaw Mix
1/4 cup diced red onion
1/4 cup Ken’s Lite Accents Asian Vinaigrette
1/2 pack (4) Ortega Whole Wheat Tortillas
Vegetable Oil
Taragon Leaves
Celery Salt
Slivered Almonds
Lemon Juice

Lemon Pepper Salt

Dipping Sauce:
Honey Mustard Dressing and Wishbone Salad Spritzers Balsamic Breeze Vinaigrette Mixed

Instructions:
1. Cut 4 tortillas in half and wrap them around the edge of a pot to shape them.
2. Mix 1/2 bag of cole slaw mix (don’t include the dressing if it comes with it), 1/4 cup red onion, some taragon leaves, celery salt (eyeballed), a couple of handfuls of slivered almonds and 1/4 cup Asian vinaigrette in a bowl. Refrigerate for an hour (this is how long it took me to finish the rest of it but you may have to wait if you’re faster).
3. Boil chicken breasts. Season with lemon juice and lemon pepper salt.
4. Cut up chicken breasts into little pieces.
5. Fry chicken breasts in teriyaki sauce.

6. Fry tortillas.
7. Put cole slaw mixture and chicken in tacos.
8. Mix the honey mustard dressing and balsamic vinaigrette to make a dipping sauce (1/2 and 1/2). Eyeball how much you need for however many you’re serving.

Cooking Time: 30 minutes for people who cook. 1 hour for people like me who never cook and it takes them extra time to cut stuff up.

Number of Tacos: 8-(2-4 servings). I like to eat 3 at a time.

Notes: I omitted stuff from the other recipes that I don’t like-diced jalapenos and lime. (Yes, the Hispanic community used to love when I did shots of tequila w/o lime. They thought I was being a badass. I just don’t like it.)

I also didn’t have any red pepper flakes or cilantro so I substituted.
The other recipes didn’t mention a dipping sauce but the Applebee’s where I live always serve them with one. It has a honey mustard tang so I threw something together.
Plus I went to 3 different stores and no one around here sells wonton wrappers (what you’re supposed to use as the taco shells) so I just got the whole wheat tortillas. You can probably get that specialty shit in NYC or something but not here. You could use whatever type of tortillas you want or have.
I did burn the tacos but I turned them inside out and I don’t care. They still tasted good.
I always like how people in movies drink wine while they cook but I don’t really drink wine so I had a beer.
